Kind Coins for Kenya

Did you ever want to help other people weren’t as fortunate as you? Well this is your chance. Now the great kindness challenge has started a fundraiser called Kind Coins for Kenya. Their goal is to collect enough money to build a new school in Kenya, Africa. To find out more watch the video or go to www.TheGreatKindnessChallenge.Org.

In the video it shows a girl named Magi. She lives in a small village in an even smaller home. She lives with two brothers her parents and another girl named Lucy who is an orphan. She wakes up very early to go to school but the school she goes to is small and they don’t have very good materials. Some kids in Kenya even walk for hours just to get to school. Magi and her family are lucky to have food but many people don’t. Even though Magi doesn’t have all the stuff that you probably have and she doesn’t have all the opportunities that you have she is grateful for what she has and she has fun. Magi wants to do well in school so she can be a nurse when she grows up. We should try and give her a chance to do that. She is only one of the many people that could benefit from this program.

It isn’t that hard. I know many people who have lots of loose change. If you thought about it I bet you could think of lots of people too. Whenever your parents go to the store and get extra change all you need to do is tell them about this program and ask for the change. I’ll even bet that some people will even be willing to give you double or even triple that amount if you tell them it will be going to be used to help other people that aren’t as fortunate. This is an easy thing to do and all you need to do is try. So get going and collect some change.

Do elephants have emotions?

Elephant (Loxodonta africana)Creative Commons License Bernard DUPONT via Compfight

Have you ever wondered if elephants have emotions like humans do? Scientists say that they have many of the same emotions that human have. They can feel sadness, joy, love, jealousy, fury, grief, compassion and distress. And when one elephant is scared by something another elephant would calm it by touching it with it’s trunk. Elephant can also miss each other when they are not together or when the are separated. Two elephants, Shirley and Jenny, were reunited at a sanctuary in Tennessee after more than 20 years apart. they locked trunks, did a giant, elephant size hug. The even bent the metal bars of the gate that separated them to get closer to each other. Elephants can also help each other to get something they really want. They can also comfort a mom that a loss her baby. Elephants are even the most emotional species in the animal kingdom. These big animals have many emotions to express their feelings with.

Vending machines are moving up

Coke Machine In Reno Curtis Perry via Compfight

Vending machines have come a very long way since the British inventor Percival Everitt invented coin contraction now called a vending machine. That was in 1833 and look how far the vending machine has come. I bet you love vending machines when you are on the go and get chocolate. Now they accept credit cards and dispense electronics like phones iPad chargers steaming hot pizza cold sodas water etc. But now the vending machine is going to the next level. Now they dispense…(drum roll please)…CARS! Yes, cars! How cool is that?
I think the vending machines are now the coolest they can get. Just imagine how cool  it is to get a car from a vending machine! Auto sales company have been working on this since 2013. That’s close to 3 years. However, the awesome car vending machine that opened in Atlanta required the customers to go through a special process before they get their brand new car. That requirement was not needed at the 5 story glass vending machine in Nashville. All you needed was to insert a special coin, (that’s worth a lot of money) choose what car you want, and drive away! What do you think they should put in vending machines next?

Hope is a Ferris Wheel, a Book Talk

Hope is a Ferris WheelIn the book Hope is a Ferris Wheel by Robin Herrera, there isn’t that much hope for 10 year old star Mackie. Star Mackie had to move because of a zombie killing story that star her sister, Winter, wrote. It might’ve included her classmate’s names. Then she might’ve got expelled. Star Mackie is just trying to figure out life in her old trailer that her mom, Winter and her live in. Everyone thinks that Star has a mullet and trailers are gross. I guess they do have the right to think that and especially since the trailer place is next to the dump. Star wants to start a trailer club to show trailers aren’t gross and only two people joined. Is there any hope for Star Mackie?

Trick or Treat! It’s Halloween

Halloween Vintage 05.JPG

I bet when you start thinking about Halloween you think CANDY or what should I be should I be a superhero. That is all okay but what is really behind that? That is why I am here today and ready to teach you what it is really all about.

First of all Halloween is short for hallows eve so Halloween is a synonym to hallows eve.  Anoka Minnesota people were the first people to celebrate Halloween. Around 2,000 years ago the Celtics had new years on November 1. They thought that the day before Halloween (October 31 which is when Halloween always takes place) was a when the living and the dead could meet again. This was also a special holiday to honor saints and all the other people who died that are in their religion. People believed that the dead might cause problems or hurt them. That is when they decided to dress up in ghost costumes and try to scare the dead that they thought would haunt them. They thought that if they thought they were dead they would not harm them. This was all in Europe. Wait how did Halloween get to America then? Halloween got to America because of migrating Europeans. Halloween changed a little. Since pumpkins are common at this time of year they carved them and used them as lanterns which people call jack-o-lanterns. Now children dress up and instead of scaring spirits they go door to door and ask for a yummy treat if they have no treats they might be in for a little trick. Now it is a saying.(trick-or-treat) So now you know what Halloween is really about. Next time in class on a Halloween party or if you are with friends tell them about Halloween. There is a lot of cool facts about Halloween. This is just something to think about when you say, “Trick or Treat”.

Kid President, Peanuts: Life is a Comic Strip

We just love Kid President’s latest video. He says, “Life is like a comic strip. Some people do the same boring thing everyday, but some people fill their black and white boxes with awesomeness! How do you add life to the empty sheet of paper?” Let’s start a conversation as we honor “Yesvember”…maybe some of the Edublogs challenge classes will join in.

Click on over and read Miss W.’s post and then do either activity 2 (a poem) or activity 3 (how you celebrate Halloween). I know that Halloween is a huge holiday in the United States but in many countries it’s not really celebrated or it may be celebrated in a very different way. You can also write a comment here and tell us how you celebrate Halloween or Thanksgiving.

Using Images

Grandma's hands Sparky via Compfight

So, we’re a little behind with our Edublogs Challenge work. Week 3’s work is all about images and how to use them correctly in your blog posts. You can’t just use any image you want off the Internet. There are rules for you to follow. This is super important stuff so be sure to read all of Miss W.’s post for Week 3 before you do the activities. You can see I’ve used an image in this post. It’s from Compfight which is a widget available on Edubogs. It’s easy to use because it includes the attribution.

The activities look really fun. You can write about a favorite time with your family, a person who passed away, or interview a grandparent and write about it. Have fun!

My Avatar

I have one question for you all. So do you act different out of the internet? I know I do. I act wild with my friends at recess. Herealisticme2re I am very calm and even a little boring. In the real world I’ll run and scream if a exciting TV show is on. I also like softball. What do you like? I like to watch TV. But if you really want to express yourself make a profile picture so people  have a idea what your personality is. In my class we made  a avatar. It was very fun for instance I have brown eyes so my avatar has brown eyes make a avatar that is you!

This is my avatar.

Recycling Starts at Home!

Have you ever wondered how you could make the world a better place? Maybe you are into recycling, or saving water or just picking up a piece of trash in the street when you see it. But most of us can only do a small part to help the environment. Another way to help is to join a group of people who feel the same way. Do you know where the closest trash clean-up is? Well, there are trash clean-ups organized all over California – and guess what…. there is even one in University City, in San Diego.

This trash clean-up is organized by “People for a Clean U.C.” and is held every month on the second Sunday. So guess what I will be doing this Sunday June 14th? I know it’s early but if you want join me, we will meet at the Starbucks on Governor at 7:45 am. Drive and go pick up some trash with my Girl Scout troop!

Maybe you have a question like what should I bring? Well, you don’t need to bring anything because at Starbucks you will receive a map and a person who is organizing the trash clean-up will tell you where to go and what to do. My best tip is to wear comfy clothes and maybe sneakers, just in case we go somewhere that flip-flops wouldn’t take care of your feet.

Hope to see you at the clean up!!!

P.S. All Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are welcome to join in the trash pick-up fun!
