History Of Chocolate

Chocolate Tuomo Lindfors via Compfight

You are standing in the shade under the beautiful cacao tree in hopes that a foot long pod will drop off the tree and into your hands. When it does you run, skip, and leap to your parents. You say, ‘let’s make chocolate!’ Chocolate tastes amazing but how is it made and what is it’s history?

Chocolate comes from cacao trees. These trees grow in tropical rainforests full of exotic birds, animals and flowers. They grow under the shade or  canopy of the other trees around them. The beautiful cacao tree grows clusters of flowers and football sized pods. Inside these pods is white pulp. If you dig deeper down you will find dozens of rows of chocolate seeds! Once the chocolate seeds are gathered they are fermented, dried, roasted, shelled, and crushed into a smooth paste from which that sweet and melty chocolate bar is made.

The Maya Indians of Central America might have begun using cacao seeds as early as 600 BC. The Maya built a great civilization that included huge temples, hieroglyphics, and a passion for chocolate.  From remains of hieroglyphics, we know that the Maya loved chocolate very, very much. During their religious holidays, they offered chocolate to their Gods. The Maya did not eat chocolate, they drank the sweet sensation out of carved pots. The Maya flavored their chocolate with chilly, flower petals, and vanilla. The Aztecs, who lived around 1500 AD used many of the same chocolate making strategies as the Maya. Just as the Maya had offered chocolate to their Gods, the Aztecs did the same.

Spanish explorers came to Central America in the late 1400s in search of gold. That is when they were first introduced to chocolate. Spanish Conquistadors adored chocolate. One Spanish Conquistador named Hernando Cortes, called chocolate the divine drink. The Conquistadors drank the sugary sweetness both hot and chilled. Chocolate first arrived in Europe in the mid 1500’s. But it is not known who brought it there.  At first the Europeans gave chocolate mixed reviews. For 2,000 years chocolate was a drink only served to the upper classes. Hundreds of thousands of African American people were kidnapped and forced to work on sugar and cacao plantations.

This is an open Cacao pod.

Around the late 1800’s there were many advances in chocolate making. First came Daniel Peter who invented milk chocolate. He added evaporated milk to a mixture of liquor, cocoa butter, and sugar which created milk chocolate. He got this recipe from Henry Nestle. In the 1920’s Milton Hershey began to bring chocolate to the public in a grand way. He sold hundreds of thousands of chocolate bars at prices most people could afford.  In the 1920’s many candy shops made their own chocolate. World war one gave chocolate a boost. American troops were given chocolate as an energy boost.

From cacao trees to delicious candy bars and from its beginnings in Central America through Europe and to the United States, chocolate has come a long, long way. According to the Farmers Almanac  more than 58 million pounds of chocolate candy is sold during Valentines week. But Halloween takes the top spot as the number one chocolate candy holiday. 90 million pounds of chocolate candy is sold during Valentines week and Americans consume on average over 12 pounds of chocolate each year. What’s your favorite kind?

Life Of Landon Donovan

Landon Donovan

Do you know who Landon Donovan is?! I’ll tell ya. Landon Donovan is an amazing soccer player and was thought to be the best American footballer (soccer!).

Early Age

First of all, Landon Donovan was born on March 4, 1982. Donovan was born in Ontario, California. Landon grew up to love sports, his dad was a semi-pro hockey player. At the age of five Donovan played soccer competitively, and on his first game he scored seven goals. When he joined the high school team, he averaged about one goal a game.

Playing Pros

The first professional soccer team Donovan played on was a German team named Bayer Leverkusen. But that team didn’t work out so he went back to America to play on the San Jose Earthquakes. He was instantly one of the best players on that team. The next year he led the US National team to the quarterfinals in the World Cup, losing to Germany 1-0. Then in 2005 Landon joined LA Galaxy and was their top goal scorer as a forward. Landon Donovan has made three world cup appearances and won three MLS cup titles. He retired in 2014.

Joining The San Diego Sockers

Donovan came out of retirement in 2019 and joined the San Diego Sockers. Landon’s first practice was hard for him, the coach said that he was a “True rookie.” The coach also said that he would have to adjust to the speed of play. Donovan’s first goal for the Sockers was in his second game and was scored in the first 12 seconds of the game. It was scored from the side. Also, in that same game he scored again by a volley, which was still in the first quarter.

Sockers LIVE

Did you know that you can go see the amazing Landon Donovan play at a San Diego Sockers game… LIVE? When I went to see him play I got a hug from him and his signature on my shoe and my soccer shirt. The Sockers have won 15 championships, and are in the playoffs again this year. Let’s see if Landon can lead them to their 16th title!

Super Glue

Super glue is truly super!!!

There is a lot of things to talk about when the topic super glue. In fact, this article is all about super glue and trust me you would want to read it. So please stick around and read this because you it keeps getting better and better.

Super glue is used for fixing stuff and putting things back together but it was originally made for clear plastic gun sights to be put on guns for World War 2. Then World War 2 soldiers found out about the super glue and thought it would be a good material for sealing up wounds from battle. Then they started bringing a small bottle of super glue into battle and used it they got a huge cut and a medic wasn’t available. Later a company found out about its true use (actually gluing stuff together and fixing broken things) and started to sell it as sticky stuff we call glue.

Super glue is not all as dangerous as you may have thought. When I was little, I thought it was horrible if I touched super glue so I was very careful around it. It is even sill fine when you get super glue in your eye. Eventually it will dry but fall off and your eye will be free again. And when you were in World War 2 and you didn’t have time for a medic to stitch you up you would just pour super glue on your cut and it would get sealed.

Super glue is also used for dealing with bad cuts (that are clean so you don’t get an infection) when you don’t have time for the doctor. My brother fell at school and got a concussion, we went to the ER but they didn’t use stitches and they used their slightly tweaked version of super glue. If you get a bad cut that isn’t that big, you can use super glue to seal it up but just make sure it is clean.

Now enough with the facts about super glue. Let’s get to he funny accidents with super glue. One time a lady in Florida got some dirt in her eye so she searched through her purse for eye drops but got super glue and accidentally glued her eye shut. Another funny story is about when someone illegally put super glue on a toilet seat the day before April Fools Day. Then another person sat on it and got his butt stuck. Then the people who worked there detached the seat from the toilet and he had to go to the hospital to remove it.

So if you are still here then I hope that you liked reading this. I liked learning about super glue and I hope I was able to help you learn about super glue too.

Great Barrier Reef in Danger

Did you know in the last thirty years half the Great Barrier Reef has died? What really interested me was that the Great Barrier reefs were getting blown up to make room to fit aircraft ship. They would also blow up the Great Barrier Reef to make passageways to get through the Great Barrier Reef.

Great Barrier Reef.

Did you know the Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven natural wonders of the world? The Great Barrier Reef is one of the largest living structures on the planet is so big in fact you can see it from outer space. It’s about 1429 miles long it provides natural habitats for over 2000 species such as shark rays, sea cows, and fish, and 411 types of hard coral. A lot of people would want to see the Great Barrier Reef before they die.

Did you know that the Great Barrier Reef is in big trouble? Global warming is one of the effects that is causing our Coral to bleach and die! It’s not just a Global warming chemicals are being dumped into the ocean which is causing The Great Barrier Reef to bleach or dies and it’s not just the Great Barrier Reef it’s other reefs to!!!

Did you know that there are things we can do to prevent the Great Barrier Reef from dying? May not know but the gas in your car is creating global warming it’s not just you, a lot of people are. This is one of the reasons why we’re having global warming. We can do something about if we can ride a bike or walk if everyone does this we won’t be having any more trouble!!

We’re saving it for a world beauty for some people it’s not like they can walk right down to the beach and take a boat to go Snorkel diving it is a world treasure for people who can’t just walk down to the beach and snorkeling with their friends no they look forward to taking a long vacation to the beach.

Leonardo Da Vinci: Genius & Artist

The Mona Lisa

What does it mean to be a genius?  History tells us that Albert Einstein was a scientific genius, Michelangelo was considered an artistic genius for his paintings and sculptures and Thomas Edison was the genius inventor who brought us the light bulb. Imagine being a genius who is world famous in all of these areas of human knowledge?  Such a person did exist way back in the 15th century, his name is Leonardo da Vinci. Not only did he make a robot that worked, invent a very complex type of math called calculus, he also painted the world’s most famous portrait, the Mona Lisa. For all of the things he accomplished in life, why is it that this painting is what he is known for the most? What made this painting so famous, who was Mona Lisa, and why did Leonardo da Vinci paint her?

As an artist, Leonardo da Vinci was paid by rich merchants, Dukes and even Princes to sculpt, paint or build instruments. One day, a rich silk merchant named Giocondo hired da Vinci to paint a picture of his wife, Lisa. Though Leonardo was getting bored with painting, he took the job anyway, maybe it was for the money or maybe the woman’s face appealed to him, nobody knows for sure why he took the job but he did

Although da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa between 1503-1507, it wasn’t quite finished so he worked on it off and on until finishing it just before his death in 1519. He used wooden handled paint brushes made with animal hair to apply many different oil painting styles with names like  Verdaccio, Sfumato,  and Glazing. What is amazing is that he didn’t paint the Mona Lisa on canvas, not even paper, instead he painted her on a piece of wood that came from a Poplar tree!

In the painting, Mona Lisa has a gentle smile and the expression on her face is what makes the painting so famous. She looks as if she is keeping a secret, and her eyes are full of mystery, too. A very fine veil covers her brown curly hair down to her very simple black dress. She doesn’t wear any fancy jewelry and she sits peacefully with her hands gracefully rested crossed, one on top of the other, on her lap. Behind her, a winding road with a bridge leads up to craggy mountains that slowly disappear into the mist.

It’s well known that Leonardo da Vinci is a genius, a scientist and an inventor but what I like the best about him is his art, especially his painting of the Mona Lisa. Even though Leonardo didn’t like painting anymore, he still painted the portrait for the rich silk merchant, but it took him 16 years to do it.  Maybe it took him that long to create such a mysterious look in her eyes, and that look on her face, just like she is keeping a secret. The Mona Lisa is a great example of the Leonardo da Vinci’s genius. Or maybe it’s just like a lot of things he started, history also tells us that he finished very few works of art that he started, so it’s no surprise that it took him so long to paint her.

The History of Soccer

Mo Salah, Mo Salah , Mo Salah…Creative Commons License Patrick Strandberg via Compfight

Imagine having to kick a pig liver all over a field, and it hardly ever goes where you want it to. Well, that is how people in the ancient times had to play soccer.  This team sport was created on the streets and has evolved over time. The word soccer seems to have come from Britain where they termed the official name of the game “association football”.  The term was shortened to soccer and became popular in the United States to keep it separate from American football.

Who created soccer

Some records trace all the way back 2,000 years ago to ancient China. Greece, Rome, and some parts of Central America all say they have started the sport too.  There have been many different stories of how a sport using your feet and a ball was created. It was actually England who created soccer on the streets and transitioned it to the sport we know today. The game we know today as soccer, the British used to and still do call it “Football.”  Football at one point became so violent that it was banned by the king of England for nearly 300 years.

The history of the soccer ball

The first soccer ball was in ancient times and that soccer ball was a pig’s liver. That liver never went where you wanted it to. The second ball was made out of vulcanized rubber. The next couple of balls over the years have changed from heavy leather to light leather. Those balls back then had to be checked by FIFA for the correct size and weight. They also had to be checked by FIFA so that the balls don’t fall apart in the middle of a game.  So the ball went from animal parts to the layered spherical ball it is today. Many changes happened as people got smarter and the sport gained popularity.

How the rules have changed from 1815 to 2017

In 1815, soccer began to be played in colleges around the world.  Some began using the Cambridge rules and some began with rugby rules. In 1863, the Cambridge rules were chosen as the official rules.  In 1869 goal kicks were first introduced into the game. Then goalies could only waste up to 30 seconds on 1 goal kick. In 1872 the first corner kicks were taken. Five years later the Sheffield rules adopted the rule. In 1875 crossbars were finally added to the goals. In 1878 whistles were first used to control the game. In 1891 penalties were first taken. They were originally called the kick of death. In 1891 the first center referee was entered into the game. In 1902 penalty spots were first put on the field. In 1904 FIFA was first established. In 1912 goalie boxes were made so they could only use their hands in the box not where ever they would like. In 1920 the rule was made that players could not be offsides on a throw-in. In 1925 the offsides rule changed from a three-player rule to a 2 player rule. In 1938 the shape of the 18-yard box was finalized. In 1990 FIFA changed the offside rule to allow the offensive player to be onside even if he was with the second to last defender. In 1992 the last major change to soccer was made, it was that if a defender kicks the ball back to his or her goalie the goalie can’t pick it up. In 1998 referees were instructed to view violent tackles as a red card offense. In 2009 assistant referees started helping the main referee. In 2013 goal-line technology was first launched. In 2017 major league soccer first started using the goal-line technology to tell if its a goal or not.

When did soccer become an Olympic sport?

The first year soccer was in the Olympics was in 1900. Soccer has been part of the summer Olympics since except in 1896 and 1932.  But at first, only a men’s competition was included in the Olympics not the woman. 96 years later a woman’s soccer event was finally included in the Olympics.  Europe dominated this Olympic sport for nearly a century when finally African and South American teams gave them tough competition.  Soccer in the Olympics is usually not as popular as World Cup soccer. Rules were added to only allow a certain number of World Cup soccer athletes into the Olympics.  Either competition brings in millions of fans.

Soccer is the most famous sport in the world. This is proven by the millions of people who play, watch and influence the sport.  Soccer players who are celebrities around the world think so too because one, they get paid a lot per year and two, they just love the sport in their heart which allows them to be the world’s greatest soccer players.  It is played in just about every county in the world. Those that are not lucky enough to play it as a career still enjoy watching it just as much. It has turned into a sport that many kids love to play and nearly everyone loves to watch.

Changing the sound on the trumpet

Bob Barnard

Creative Commons License Laurie Wilson via CompfightCreative Commons License Anthony via Compfight

The trumpet has all different ways of changing the sounds. There is four ways of changing the instrument sound. 1. Use another type. 2. Use a different mouthpiece with a bigger or smaller shape. 3. Push the valves. 4. Blow the air slower or faster through the mouthpiece. But why does the sound changes? Well, I’m here to tell you.

The most common trumpet is the B Flat trumpet. There are other ones with other sounds like the  A, C, D, E Flat, E, low F, and G trumpets. There are more like the piccolo trumpet that’s the only one with 4 valves, the slide trumpet, the bass trumpet, the pocket trumpet, the baroque trumpet, the rotary trumpet, the herald trumpet, the Ptrumpet which is made with plastic. Some of the instruments close to the trumpet are a cornet, flugelhorn, and the bugle. There are still more but this is most of them.

The reason the sound changes is because the length and the size of the pipes and the instrument are different or the material is different like the Ptrumpet.

You can change notes when you push the valves. There are seven combinations of the three valves. You can change the sound of the trumpet also without changing the valves by blowing the air faster or slower through the mouthpiece while buzzing. You still need to keep the fingering the same though. But why does the sound change? Well I’m going to tell you. They have holes in the valves that change the path of the air and the vibration to the bell. That makes the air reach to the bell quicker or slower that changes the sound.

You might think the mouthpiece won’t affect the sound at all. But you’re wrong. The mouthpiece will effect the sound too. In fact, it has a large effect on the instrument sound. There are 8 parts on the mouthpiece. Each one makes a difference. smaller the inner rim diameter is, the higher the range you could play. The mouthpiece makes a difference to the instrument because of the shape. Like if the cup was bigger/deeper, it will make a deeper sound because more space to vibrate. If you need to play a long time, it will be quite difficult because you need to fill the big space with air constantly.

Mouthpiece parts

  1. Inner rim diameter
  2. Rim width
  3. Rim contour
  4. Rim Edge
  5. Cup
  6. Throat
  7. Backbore
  8. Shank

Today I taught you different ways to change the sound which is, push the valves, use a different type, use a smaller or larger mouthpiece, and blow the air faster or slower. You also now know why too. So I hope you enjoyed reading this article and learned at least something about the trumpet.

Earth’s Biggest Bee

Have you ever seen a giant bee that’s about the size of 4 honey bees? This article talks about how the World’s biggest bee was re-discovered 38 years after first seen. It was found by an American Entomologist whose name was Adam Messer. He first saw the giant bee in 1858 in Indonesia.

Did you know that bees are the most important insect on Earth? Of course, honey bees are important but the biggest bee on Earth would be more important in some way. People call this giant bee the “ Megachile pluto” or Wallace’s Giant Bee. Wallace’s Giant Bee is 1.5 inches long, about the size of your thumb which maybe would be the size of your palm.

Wallace’s Giant Bee got its nickname from Alfred Russel Wallace. The British naturalist was the first to record the existence of the massive insect in 1981 but Adam Messer was the first to see Wallace’s Giant Bee before it got its nickname. Now, thanks to a team of dedicated American and Australian biologists, the magnificent bee has been photographed live in its natural habitat for the first time.

In 1981, Adam Messer spotted the magnificent bee on three different Indonesian islands. Since then, many scientists have tried to look for the rare insect, but have had no luck. American natural history photographer Clay Bolt first heard this in the early 2000s. However, his desire to seek out the elusive creature did not begin until 2015. In 2019, Bolt and Wyman went to Indonesian islands with 2 guides of the area. They didn’t find anything until the 5th day. They were walking through an Indonesian island with no hope of finding the massive insect until one of the local guides noticed that the giant insect was 8 feet above the ground resting on a tree. The local guide said this “ it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen”.

Bolt and Wyman hope to work with Indonesian scientists to find other specimens of Wallace’s Giant Bee. finding the massive insect alive in the wild has also renewed hope among researchers that more rare species are alive and well within the Indonesian forests. What would you do if there was a Megachile pluto ( Wallace’s Giant Bee ) by you? Would you panic, run away, or ignore it?

The History of Math

Have you ever wondered about math? Why it’s useful and why you need to learn it? Where it came from? Math is a way to upgrade our brains and it makes us smarter. We can learn alot from math and other subjects. Without math the world wouldn’t be the world it is today, and that means nothing like video games, computers, tablets, and other things you might love. Imagine your life without things like video games and tv, does that sounds good?

The Mosque-cathedral of Cordoba Spain 3D

Sumerian Lugal (king)

Math was created in the 6th century BC by the Sumerians. The Sumerians inhabited the land of Southern Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The Tigris was 1250 miles (2000 kilometers) long. Each Sumerian city-state was independent and ruled by its own Lugal (king). Each city had fine public buildings including some temples that had a huge tower guarding it. The Sumerians used math to measure land, tax individuals, chart the sky, and even to develop an lunar calendar! So…math was invented 2500-2600 years ago in the 6th century by the Sumerians in Southern Mesopotamia!

Carl Friedrich Gauss

There are many famous mathematicians in history, but I’m gonna tell you about Carl Friedrich Gauss, one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. He was born in April 30,1777 in Brunswick, Germany. A popular story about this mathematical genius is like this:

One day his elementary school teacher asked the class 1+2+3+4+5+6+7…+98+99+100 and surprisingly, Gauss found the answer. He did 1+100, 2+99, 3+98,4+97 and each number sentence equaled 101. Since there was 50 pairs, he multiplied 50 by 101 which equals 5050. Gauss died in February 23, 1855 from a heart attack.

Math challenges your brain and helps us to think better. We develop our reasoning abilities. Reasoning skills are important because they help us solve problems and look for solutions. Every career uses some sort of math. More importantly, doing math helps the mind organize complicated problems into clear, simple, and logical steps. Math has a huge affect on all of our lives. Math helps us do every day tasks like cooking , cleaning, and shopping. Math helps us complete these tasks without completely messing it up. For example, you need math for cooking because you need to measure things such as cups of flour. In a classroom where students speak to each other about mathematics, the ideas of those students are valued. It also allows students learn to new ways to understand the world.

Without math, Earth wouldn’t be how it is today. When math was invented, it was used to help with things that might have usually took a long time to do. Mathematicians invented new ways to do math and teach other people these ways. It took math for a lot of things to be made like video games, computers, TV, and a whole lot more. Since math helps us so much, it’s very important we learn more about math. Math workbooks, math classes, and learning math at young ages can all help us learn more about math. If we learn alot about math in the future, we could uncover unbelievable not just more about Earth, but also more about the universe.

History of Paris

Eiffel tower

The sites and scenery of Paris are amazing.  Paris is known for its historical landmarks, fashion, art and romanticism.  the nickname for Paris is the City of Lights because Paris was one of the first cities to have electricity in the 1870s.  if you were French, instead of “the city of lights” you could have said “la ville lumiere.’

One of the many historical landmarks is the Eiffel Tower.  Paris, France got the Eiffel Tower on March 31, 1889. the person who designed the Eiffel Tower was Gustav Eiffel.   once the wrought Iron lattice tower was built, it attracted tourists. There were so many tourists that London, England built its own tower, called the Tower of London.

The second historical site is called the Notre Dame Cathederal.  the Notre Dame Cathederal is a Catholic Church. Its construction started in 1163 and was completed in 1345. It is visited by 30,000 people a day of all religions because of the beautiful architecture and art inside.  Unfortunately it sadly caught on fire on April 15, 2019 but luckily, most of the Cathederal still remains.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, French fashion was a hit.  Vogue was founded in 1892. Vogue is a very popular fashion magazine. some of the most famous Paresian designers are Coco Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Jean-Paul Gaultier.  Paris is still known as the fashion capital of the world.

Paris is full of history and culture.  The Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathederal and the fashion history are a short sample of some of the interesting attractions Paris has to offer.  People continue to travel to Paris to see these and other historical landmarks, and the world is inspired by the artists and architects who call Paris home.

The History of Taekwondo

By Danica

The reason I chose the history of Taekwondo is because I do it and it’s seems like it will be a fun topic to learn about. Taekwondo is a Korean sport. It teaches you self defense. For example if a stranger tries to kidnap you, you can use self defense to get away.

Each belt symbolizes someone’s advancement in Taekwondo. There are many belts in Taekwondo. Here they are in order -white, yellow, purple, orange, orange senior, green, green senior, blue, blue senior, brown, brown senior, red, red senior, and black.

Taekwondo was invented in 2333 B.C about, 4,300 years ago, but the name has only been around since 1955. It was invented in Old Korea. Back then Korea was divided in three parts Koguryo, Paekje, and Silla.

In the classes of Taekwondo when you are a black belt you can choose to be on the demo team or a training assistant. The demo team demonstrates Taekwondo and training assistant helps teach the lower belts Taekwondo.

Taekwondo is one word with several parts to it. The parts are, “Tae” meaning foot, “Kwon” meaning fist, and “Do” meaning “way of”.  So, literally Taekwondo means the way of the foot and fist, but you do not just kick and punch. You also learn values of behavior.

When invented, Taekwondo was considered a self defense encourager. Today Taekwondo is considered a fun sport. Today we still use it for self defense, but it’s more fun and not so strict.

Are kids eating too much sugar?

plaisirs gourmands de l'enfanceCreative Commons License Melodie RGB via Compfight

Parents today are letting kids eat too much sugar. I think kids should have less sugar. First for doing chores parents are used to giving kids candy as a reward. Kids are literally addicted to eating sweets. I have been asking my friends about what chips and dips are good, Then the conversation ends with “yeah donut oreos are really good”. Kids are eating way too much sugar and that is REALLY unhealthy. I am used to my pantry being filled with chips ahoy and reeses and other unhealthy foods. I am used to me asking my friends, “Hey do you like celery” and they say, “Ewww no I like cookies”.

Whenever I am at a restaurant my little brother always asks, “Can I get soda?” I ask that too and I regret that because it is unhealthy for my teeth. And it is because i am used to my parents giving me those kinds of foods and drinks. Kids need to eat healthier. Kids should only have at least 24 grams of sugar a day, one serving of Captain crunch has half that. Captain crunch is supposed to be a healthy kids breakfast cereal and giving kids half the amount they are supposed to have in one day is extremely unhealthy.

Our parents were used to eating healthy as kids. So why shouldn’t kids today? Kids need to have less sugar. Kids are getting more and more obese today because they are eating more sugar then they are supposed to have. I have always heard my dad telling stories of his grandma making him fried okra and salads. And my friends are telling me stories of how their mom puts oreos and snickers in their chocolate cake flavored milkshake. My dad always says “The better it tastes, The worse it is for you, The worse it tastes the better it is for you.” I agree with him

Kids need to eat less sugar if they want to stay healthier and live longer, Sure sugar is addictive but kids need to resist.

The Miwok Tribes Arts & Crafts

Miwok Indian basket

Miwok baskets were beautiful and functional.

Imagine you are a Miwok women, sitting in a hut made of straw with a half woven basket.  The basket you are making is big and deep. It will be great for gathering . You have some grass next to you that you pick up and start weaving into the basket.  You weave and weave until your hands hurt. You have finished the basket. You start to decorate the basket with the shell beads you made yesterday. When you finish, it looks beautiful.

Crafts

The Miwok Indians made many different crafts and beautiful things.  The Miwok would make many different kinds of baskets using the natural resources like grass. The Miwok made beautiful designs on the baskets like zig zags and butterflies. They also made shell beads that they would use as money, also jewelry, and to decorate baskets. The Miwok also made paint.  The Miwok would use chalk to make white, and charcoal to make black.

The Miwok were skilled basket makers.   The Miwok made a type of basket that wasn’t like a basket but it was a basket.  It had sticks tied together at the bottom so they would form a v shape.

At the top there was a big stick in the shape of  an o. This was tied to the top of the other sticks.  This basket was called a seed beater basket, and it was used to harvest seeds.

They even made a basket that went on their back.  There was a strap that went around their head and onto the basket.  The basket was a big deep one that could hold many things like a baby.

The crafts the Miwok made weren’t just to look pretty, they helped them with their everyday lives.  The baskets held the stuff they gathered. But some stuff was made to be pretty. Like with the shell beads,  they were used as jewelry and to decorate basket.

Using The Resources

The Miwok made very nice crafts considering they didn’t have a Michael’s store down the street.  They had to go out, and find the natural resources they were going to use. I know it would be hard to weave a basket from scratch, or make paint from chalk or charcoal.  Maybe even make a shell bead. Imagine trying to weave a basket. Imagine how much effort it would take to drill a hole through a shell just to make a single bead! These were the things the women of the Miwok tribe had to do in their everyday life. If  you like basket weaving, making shell beads, or making paint, than you might like to be a Miwok Indian.

Should Sports Teams Change Their Names and Logos?

Did you know that there are over 500 Native American tribes in the United States of America. About 2,100 sports teams contain Native American names and logos. Since 2005 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) told 18 teams to change their names or logo because it is offensive to native americans and they don’t like being called indians or redskins. From my point of view, sports teams should change their names because they can be offensive to Native Americans because it makes look like savages. Many Native Americans don’t like the team names because it makes it look like they all have the same culture even though there is many different cultures of Native Americans.

Many of the team logos make the Indians look like savages. In fact many Indians were rarely at war or violent. People don’t want to accept the fact that the Redskins name is racist and offends many Native Americans. Nine out of 10 Native Americans think the Redskins name is racist because it makes them look like savages and violent people.  In 2017 California governor Jerry Brown banned any school to have the name or logo of the Redskins.

The team names make Indians look like one culture of people. The cartoon like logos make them all look the same. For example, the Chief’s logo of Chief Wahoo has a painted face and feathers. Not all Indian tribes painted their faces or wore feathers. One thing fans do is that they go to baseball games and they go to the game with feathers even though not a lot of tribes do that. There are 500 plus different Indian tribes in the United States and they are all very different.

The Seminoles are at FSU (Florida State University) because the Native American tribe the seminoles said they can use their name as the school name and logo. The Seminoles the tribe says represents bravery and courage. Also, San Diego State University there has been multiple petitions to get rid of their name and logo and mascot of the Aztecs. Surprisingly in the year 2000 about 95% of people voted to keep the name and mascot of the Aztecs. I think the mascot is fine. It shows the culture of the Aztecs and doesn’t make them look like a cartoon or savage.

Did you know that most protests for the Cleveland Indians happen on opening day?  In 2019, the Cleveland Indians are changing their logo, Chief Wahoo. They’ve had this logo since 1947.  I think it is good that they are changing their logo because they are hosting the All Star Game the year they are getting rid of their logo. That makes me think they are honoring tribes. So, in conclusion those are my reasons I think that they should change the names and logos. But then again, some teams say that they will never ever change their team names because it is an important part of team history. It seems to me that all teams should change their names if it’s offensive.

Should We Ban Plastic Bags

Imagine yourself as a fish. You see a weird thing that is clear. You try to eat it and you suffocate. Later you become a shark’s dinner which means that the shark is now polluted too. Think of all the creatures that eat plastic and die. I think we should ban plastic, especially plastic bags. Plastic trash ends up in the ocean and can really harm marine life.  Another reason for banning plastic is all plastic bags can also contribute to global climate change.

To begin with plastic trash often ends up in the ocean. Have you ever heard of a trash island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? This  island is made up of trash that is the size of Texas that is still growing in size. Trash island is estimated to be about 5,800,000 square miles!  For instance plastic bags are usually only used for twenty minutes and then begin the journey to the ocean through the sewers, because most owners of the bags just leave them in the street to be blown away into the sewers. Did you know that more than 17 billion pounds of plastic trash ends up in the ocean each year?

Second, plastic bags can be harmful to marine life. For instance in Norway 30 plastic bags were found in the stomach of a beached whale.  Plastic bags consumed could lead to death by suffocation which is very sad. Did you know that at least 1 million seabirds and 100,000 mammals die each year from plastic materials.

Third, plastic bags can also contribute to global climate change.  Plastic bags are made out of a material that will release greenhouse gases when they decompose. Which is a very big core material in global climate change. The amount of trash that is burned each year in the dump will make massive impact on global climate change. Climate change will heat up the earth melt all of the ice in the world and make more water which will consume all the land in the world.

I think we should ban plastic bags. Did you know that California banned plastic bags last November? I say every state should do that. It’s easy to think plastic bags do not do any harm to the environment and can be recycled, but most don’t recycle them and put them in the regular trash or let them blow away. When you face the facts really plastic bags add to global climate change, harm marine life, and end up in our oceans or landfills. In the end you are sacrificing creatures to your benefit to live in your everyday life. Next time you go to the store think twice about your plastic bag or paper bag choice.

Cats or Dogs?

Image result for cat v dog

There’s no question that Americans love both dogs and cats. About 48 percent of people own dogs and 38 percent own cats. That’s according to the American Pet Products Association. But one thing many people can’t agree on is which animal makes a better pet.

Cat lovers say their pets are easier to care for than dogs. They point out that cats don’t bark or jump on visitors. Also, it’s cheaper to own a cat.  Dogs often need training classes and eat more than cats do.

Still, dog owners say the money they spend is worth it. They argue that dogs are more social than cats. Plus, scientists who studied the brains of both animals determined that dogs are smarter than cats. Dog lovers also point out that canines help people in ways that felines can’t. For example, dogs can be trained as service pets for people who are disabled or have food allergies. What you think?

Ocean Protector

The beautiful blue-green ocean looks as pretty as the sky but, it is not nearly as big.  The ocean is bigger than all the land masses on earth put together. It covers 70% of the Earth’s surface.  Many creatures live in or depend on the ocean which is what makes the ocean so important. Lots of them we used for food, but many others are interesting to learn about and watch.

My favorite marine animals are sharks, octopus, dolphins and bioluminescent creatures.  These animals are my favorites because they have special skills to help them survive. Sharks can replace their teeth many times during their life because they have many rows of teeth.  An octopus squirts its ink out to distract the predator so it can escape. Also, an octopus will pretend to be the predator so it won’t get eaten. A dolphin’s dorsal fin can make it look like a shark.  They hunt in a pod or group and use teamwork. Bioluminescent creatures live in the deep parts of the ocean. They use their bright and colorful light for both protection and to catch food. These are some of the reason why I like these animals the best.

The ocean is in great danger! Every second there’s a ton of trash dumped into the ocean. Some states and countries don’t want to make areas for trash. They put their trash in the oceans.  If we don’t stop them the ocean will get polluted with bad things. Many animals will eat ts are sold every minute around the world.  People should recycle the plastic water bottles. Also, people should buy reusable water bottles. Everyone needs to get involved, even kids. Ocean Connectors is a group here in San Diego for kids to learn about ocean conservation.  Kids go on field trips to clean-up beaches and learn about marine life.

We are all connected to the ocean so we have to protect the ocean.  We should defend all the living things in the ocean because if we do not, no one will.  The end result will be that as the ocean plants die the fish that eat them will also die.  This will cause a chain of dying because many of the ocean animals will starve.  Eventually, the oceans will die. All the ocean animals will become extinct.  It is our job to make the ocean clean and keep the ocean animals safe so we all can survive. This is an important job that everybody is obligated to do. Tell me, what would you do to help save the ocean?

Let’s end factory farms

Chickens in cages

Many chickens are stuffed together in each cage just to get their eggs.

Have you ever heard about those factory farms that adults are always talking about? Well, I’m gonna show you why we should ban them. First of all the factory farms produce more CO2 than volcanoes and that is causing global warming. Also, It is one of the worst forms of animal abuse right next to keeping exotic animals as pets and Bullfighting.
To start it off, factory farms make about %86 of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. That is like 8 times more carbon dioxide produced than volcanoes! Carbon dioxide traps heat inside the atmosphere and that is what has been causing global warming. The planet Venus’ surface is completely covered in carbon dioxide making it the hottest planet in the solar system! And it’s not even the closest to the sun! Would you like to boil alive like venus?
To make things worse it is a severe form of animal cruelty. Like in the picture above many animals are smushed together in order to get more eggs. This is very painful and uncomfortable to the animal. If you want this to stop you should say something.

Exotically Cute But Not a Good Pet

蜥蜴 (Lizard): Olympus E-M1 MII / Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm f/4-6.3 O.I.S ansel.ma via Compfight

Imagine you’re in a new home away from your mom and dad, and you eat werid food and drinks. That is what it’s like as an exotic pet. In my opinion exotic animals should not be pets! As far as I am concerned they can ruin an ecosystem, it’s bad for the animal, and the owner might not know how to take care of them

First of all, the exotic animal can ruin an ecosystem. For example, the ferret is banned in California because it eats the bald eagle. The bald eagle is needed. The exotic animals might do things they’re not supposed to do.  Another reason it’s bad to keep exotic animals for pets is that if the pets are released into a new environment, they could give diseases to other native animals in the region.

Also, the animals can even get killed by some of the thing in your yard. In other words you have to watch them in when playing outside and with things in your yard. loris remove sharp firmt teeth painful to the animal. Some animals living conditons! Also gitter can hunt animals like tulers. One day they fonded a whale with paistic bags inside!

Furthermore, the owner don’t learn to take of them. The need a certain item like sheither, medicine, foods. And if the owner feeds it a type of food the owner can hurt or even kill the animals. Also its cruel with the wrong things and invermeant.

In conclusion, the reason exotic animals SHOULD NOT be pets is because they can ruin an ecosystem, it’s bad for the animal, and the owner might not know how to take care of them properly.
