Our Avatars

This week we had a ton of fun creating our avatars. We’ve even made a voicethread to introduce them to you, adding a few comments about our avatars and what makes them like us.

About the Author

Hello my name is Karen McKelvey and I am a 3rd grade teacher at Curie Elementary School in San Diego, California. I began teaching at Curie Elementary in 2002. I feel fortunate to be part of such a great community. I love blogging with my students as it provides them with an authentic audience for their work. Collaborative group work and project-based learning are key components of my classroom. I completed my Masters degree in Educational Technology from San Diego State University in 2010. Many of the concepts/pedagogy and technologies I learned about in this program, like learning management systems, Google tools, and blogs are implemented in my classroom. Technology plays a key role in the learning that occurs in our classroom. We don’t learn about technology, we learn with technology. Students are engaged in activities that incorporate writing, research skills, critical and creative thinking skills, and much more on a daily basis.

      Thank you. If you watch the VoiceThread video we explain why we picked our avatars and why they look the way they look. Our favorite avatar maker was Mess Dudes and the Reasonably Clever websites. We’ll add them to our favorite links when we get a chance.

    I came up with my avatar because I love Jedis and Star Wars, so I took a Jedi torso and put it on me, then for my accessories I put an ipod touch in my hand because I like music.

    Hi class!!

    We would love to know all the websites that you used to make your avatars. You are all very creative and showed your personalities through your creations.       We are so glad that you liked our avatars. We used several different sites including Mess Dudes! Two of the sites we used are listed in the sidebar of our Edublog under Useful Links.     I love the creative expression in having all the students choose their own avatar. Then the great use of VoiceThread to present themselves. Brilliant!

    Kaya was absent or unable to explain hers so we logged in to the VoiceThread so that she could contribute her thoughts on her avatar. I want to go back to third grade and do this!
