Shadow Tracking

Hello. We would like to tell you something about what we did in science this week for our Edublogs challenge. We’re also hoping you can answer a few questions for us.  This week we learned that the Sun always rises in the east and sets in the west no matter where you are on Earth. Is that really true? Does the Sun rise in the east and set in the west where you live?

Also, we tracked our shadows throughout the day. We went outside on a sunny day. We traced around our shadows with chalk on the blacktop (playground) in the early morning around 8:30 a.m., then again at 11:45 a.m, and finally at 2:05 p.m. We wanted to find out if our shadows moved and changed size and shape. We discovered that they did. In the morning our shadows were tall and skinny, and the later morning and middle of the day they were short and fat. We were wondering if you’d get the same results too if you did this experiment where you live? It is fall (or autumn) here. Does the season affect the size and shape of shadows too?

We look forward to hearing from you.

About the Author

Hello my name is Karen McKelvey and I am a 3rd grade teacher at Curie Elementary School in San Diego, California. I began teaching at Curie Elementary in 2002. I feel fortunate to be part of such a great community. I love blogging with my students as it provides them with an authentic audience for their work. Collaborative group work and project-based learning are key components of my classroom. I completed my Masters degree in Educational Technology from San Diego State University in 2010. Many of the concepts/pedagogy and technologies I learned about in this program, like learning management systems, Google tools, and blogs are implemented in my classroom. Technology plays a key role in the learning that occurs in our classroom. We don’t learn about technology, we learn with technology. Students are engaged in activities that incorporate writing, research skills, critical and creative thinking skills, and much more on a daily basis.

    Dear Class,
I just found another class in England who are investigating shadows. Check out their post and comment. Check the Blog Roll on Year 5 Aim High.

    Hi Bloggin’ Frogs,
I read about your shadow tracking and like to give you some answers to your questions.
I live in Australia and it is currently spring over here. I found it very interesting that in the morning your shadows are large and skinny, and at midday, your shadows are short and stubby.
Thank you for telling me all about shadows.
