Shorter Receipts

This is the receipt for a pack of gum!

“Most receipts are really long!” I think in line as I see the lady in front of me getting a five foot long receipt. Help the world shorten receipts. Shorter receipts will make everyone happy. Fifteen percent of California’s trash is receipts. Shorter receipts mean less paper in dumps. And that’s awesome. If we use the back it will save a lot of paper.

Long receipts can do a lot of bad things. Receipts that are really long wastepaper wasting paper. Long receipts also waste ink. Did you know that about one cartridge a day. I went to CVS and got five things the receipts was like three feet long.

Not everything is useful on a receipts. Coupons are a waste if it is already in a book, (if you don’t know coupons are things that save you money). I saw the same phone number 3 times on a receipt. Lots of people think we need all that stuff but they really don’t.

People don’t like long receipts. I want to help people to be happy. When I go to Sprouts or another store and I see all of the junk on the back it makes me angry. (And that’s what I want to get across). Come with me and ask for no receipts. People Really long receipts waste a lot of paper.

We Need To Recycle!

We have to recycle more for our Earth.

Recycling makes Earth beautiful, and there’s other good ways that recycling helps Earth. Do you know what helps Earth a lot? Here are three reasons.

We can save a lot of money. We won’t have to buy new things to make recyclable resources. When factories make new resources, the air gets polluted. But if we recycle, we won’t have as much polluted air. Recycling’s meaning is similar to the meaning of reusing. We can keep reusing things and save money.

If we don’t recycle, we are wasting recyclable resources! If we keep wasting those resources, there will be no recyclable resources and there will be many trashes on land or landfills because we can’t recycle. But if we recycle, we’re not wasting recyclable resources!

Less recycling means a lot of landfills. If there are so many landfills, the earth will get wasted by all of the trash! But if we don’t recycle, landfills will get bigger and bigger and there will be more trash on the land. We put big boxes in landfills and landfills get bigger, but if we recycle we will make smaller landfills. If we have so many landfills, there will be no place left for anything!

If we recycle we can save many things. We can save money, resources, and Earth. To shorten that, we will live happier lives if we recycle!

No more littering on the beach

Do you enjoy the beautiful beaches of San Diego? Well, guess what? They are literally getting destroyed! The beautiful beaches of San Diego, California, and others in the United States are being littered and quickly being destroyed by trash. The beaches of the world are being trashed too. One little piece of trash might not seem like a big deal, but littering is a major problem in the United States. In fact, litter cleanup costs the country about $11.5 billion a year! That’s a lot of money! If we did not litter on the beach, The United States could save a whole lot of money!

When people litter on the beach that means other people have to waste their time to clean it up. Once when I went to the beach do you know what happened? I laid right down on a bottle! You know, bottles are not comfortable! So then instead of playing in the water I had to pick it up, and then find a trash can. The worst part is, by the time I got back someone threw a bottle onto my towel!!! Also, Some people (like myself) try to keep the beach clean and/or litter free, but when people litter, the people trying to keep the beach clean have to spend more time on that instead of enjoying other time spender activities like playing games or even just laying in the sun.

Guess what, when trash goes to sea dolphins and other creatures can die from it. If a pile of heavy trash attaches to an animal that breathes air the animal can drown! Also even worse all of those beloved water animals of ours can die from choking on all that trash! The worst part is that like if you have a super rare fish that is the last of its kind or any animal (I’m just being creative with the fish) that needs water can get pulled out of the water and suffocate and die.

Hey, Trash on the beach, really? sure you are lazy and don’t want to pick it up but it is ugly and really dangerous, especially to kids! When trash is everywhere it looks like a dump and you know what, dumps are really ugly!!! Also if people into the sand they could hurt themselves really bad like when I was on the beach just walking and then out of nowhere boom! I stepped on a piece of broken glass and got a really nasty cut!!!

I really hate dirty beaches aren’t they the worst? Well, I think dirty beaches are the worst because of these reasons. First, when people litter on the beach that means other people have to waste their time cleaning it up and that’s not fun at all! Second, when trash goes to sea,dolphins and other people can die from it and that could lead to extinction. Finally, Third of all it is ugly and super dangerous!!!

Buy alternative cars

Alternative cars are cool with all these gadgets and stuff but do you know why they are good for the earth? They don’t use gas! Gas costs money and is harmful to us. They don’t harm the Earth’s environment so they will be better for the planet. Fuel efficient cars are better for the environment and will be the future cars.

I have seen a lot of cool cars but the coolest one I’ve seen is the new Tesla Roadster at the mall because it is fuel efficiency.This means this car does not use gas this is good because is doesn’t bring out harmful gases.Regular cars bring out harmful gases and if this keeps on our species are going to be extinct! Harmful gases are in the air that are dangerous to us and we can die because of them.

These cars don’t need gas so you pay no money for gas but you still have to charge the car. Sometimes cars use regenerative braking.This means the car charges itself when you brake so you don’t have to charge the car and the car charges itself.

So how can harmful gases harm us? When cars bring out harmful gases they go into the air and make a hole of ozone.Ozone is something that keeps the suns harmful rays away from us. This is called global warming. The suns harmful rays melt ice and heat up the planet just like Venus.

Alternative cars are the future of cars and more alternative cars are being produced. If people use them more there will be less global warming.. So remember that alternative cars are better, don’t use gas and are the future of cars.

We need new computers

Our school needs new computers! I’m going to give you some good reasons why. I hope I can convince you that we need new computers here at Curie Elementary School. We need the best computers to be the best students.

Totally frustrated with a netbook!

One reason we need new computers is because our old computers don’t always connect to the internet. Many of our computers turn themselves off while we are using them. Another reason our old computers need to be replaced is because when we try to turn them off, sometimes they don’t turn off all the way, and the batteries run out. Often, they freeze in the middle of a project. Losing work slows me, and other students, down and wastes our work time. These days, we use computers for almost everything: writing, research, word processing, etc. We students deserve to have computers that run smoothly.

Our classrooms would benefit from having new computers. Please consider the examples I have presented. I hope you will agree that we are in desperate need of new computers at Curie Elementary School.

Better songs for our jog-athon

In our school we have a fundraising program called the jog-Athlon. What we do is we have an hour to run/walk laps, while were running they set up a nurse table water station and orange slices at the same time they play music. It sounds like fun right but to make it more fun they should play different music. I have 2 older teenage siblings so I know a lot of fun songs and there bands for example ‘Imagines Dragons, It’s Time. Imagines Dragons is my favorite band along with lots of other songs in my top ten favorite.

The songs they have now are way too old. They might as well play the Hokey Pokey every single time I go to the Jog-athlon I get annoyed from how the songs are from 1970s. I’ve heard complaints from others about how they play dumb song that are even too old for the radio. So I hope you understand why the songs they play are weird and old and how it wouldn’t hurt anything to update the songs.

Women Deserve An Education

Do you think women deserve an education? A huge problem in the world is women and girls’ rights in Pakistan. They are ruled by the Taliban who think women and girls don’t deserve an education. I think women and girls in Pakistan deserve an education.

If women in Pakistan are not educated, their child probably won’t have a good future. For example if the mom is not educated she might not talk in correct grammar in front of a newborn kid and the child might not talk well later on. That is only one reason. Imagine all the things that could happen to a child that is raised by a non educated parent. It is a forever going list, huh? My mom makes dinner for my family most nights. If she was not educated it would have too much or not enough of something. Do you know how you would do without an educated mom?

Women and girls in Pakistan deserve equal rights to men and boys. It is unfair and cruel to be treated like that. Most women and girls are offended and mad. What would you do if you were a girl in Pakistan? It makes no sense to treat women like this because we are almost the same as boys except for our gender. This reminds me of Martin Luther King Junior because he fought for black rights a made a difference in our world.

If women are educated they can make changes to our world too. Women have made huge contributions to our world. If Marie Curie, Sally Ride, Amelia Earhart, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Anne Frank, Eleanor Roosevelt, even Sacagawea. Now there is a brave girl named Malala Yousafzai who is fighting for women education. She started as a kid wanting anybody’s rights and then started discussing this to the world because not a lot of people knew then but know many more people know, like you! She got shot at when she was 14 because her beliefs were not accepted and they tried to stop her from adding on to her thoughts of making changes in her country. She is alright now and still fighting for freedom. She was asked to talk on the news in London because of her amazing thoughts and courage. I think Malala Yousafzai is going to make a change in the world for her country and others.

To sum it up today lets see what we learned. If people make a change new women can make a contribution by inventing something or find cures for diseases. Women and girls would be happier, feel more respected, and have education if Pakistan’s rulers changed their minds. I think women and girls in Pakistan deserve an education.

Stop Ocean Pollution Now

About 14 billion pounds of trash is in the ocean right now. Do you care about that? People throw cigarette butts in the water off the boardwalk and dump sewage of their boat and that’s just really gross. I’m an ocean person I go sailing and surfing and when I see a trash bag or soda can all I think is how selfish whoever did that is. Ocean pollution kills animals, and spoils the beauty of our ocean.

When it rains the rain washes it in the rain gutter then it all goes to the ocean then the ocean current pulls it into the middle of the ocean. In the ocean there are all these floating islands of trash from all the currents in the sea. Out of all of them they weigh up to 14 billion pounds. About 70% of that is from people littering on the street.

Every year more than 100,000 marine animals die because of pollution (that means trash too.) Fish get stuck in fishing nets, lobsters get stuck in coke cans, and bad liquids kill multiple animals. All of this we can use for resources so by polluting the ocean where also wasting things that we can use for resources.

If we stop polluting the ocean we won’t kill animals and it wouldn’t ruin the fun for others. All of this comes from us and we need to put a stop to it or the ocean will soon be a giant bowl of water full of junk. I know that if we work together that won’t happen. So if you through your trash in trash cans and dispose of boat waist in the right spot you and others would be much more happy.

Abusing Kids is Wrong!

Children are helpless against adults and don’t deserve to be abused. They are smaller, weaker, and not able to defend themselves. Also their brains are still developing and can’t fully think for themselves. If they say no or try to defend themselves they will get abused a lot more than they did the first time. They also won’t defend themselves because they are way to scared to try because the parents are big and smart and kids are not. Parents know that is wrong and they think it is punishment but isn’t it is a horrible thing to do when kids can’t defend themselves. Child abuse is one the most cruelest things to do to a kid.

If parents don’t abuse their kid they won’t get hurt. When parents abuse their kid they will get hurt and if we stop that they won’t get hurt at all. Parents are supposed to love and care for their kid or kids and when they abuse their kid that is not caring for them at all and it is mean to them. It is not nice to abuse kids, people, dogs, etc. because you are supposed to love your things and not treat them like a piece of trash. it is not caring to abuse your kid or anything that is yours. it is not nice to abuse. I do dangerous things outside mom?” and they said “I don’t care do whatever you want.” It is sad.

Any type of child abuse is illegal. It is against the law to abuse kids. There are lots of different types of child abuse and a lot of them are inappropriate and wrong to do to a kid. Lots of different people can abuse children strangers can and your friends parents can and lots of different people can abuse kids. People can be separated from their kid and they can be arrested for abusing kids. Kids don’t feel safe when they get abused and they will need secure not unsafe. People know it is wrong and it is sad to see kids get hurt and get sad and cry and get bruises on them.

When parents abuse their kid they are being a bad example to their kid. Parents are suppose to be a good example to their kid and when they abuse them it is like saying it is OK to abuse their kid when are older. It is being a horrible example to their kid when they hit and do very bad things to them. It makes me sad to see parents be a bad example to their kid and do bad things it is like they don’t care about. Like if they said can “I do dangerous things outside mom?” and they said “I don’t care do whatever you want.” They are not being a bad example.It is disgusting to see that happen to kids.

Child abuse is the most horrible things to do to a kid. If we stop child abuse there will not be anyone will get in trouble and go to jail and there will not be any separations and the world will be more happy. There are a lot of benefits to stop child abuse like no hitting the kids, more love in the world, no separating anyone from anyone , and lots more things. It will change the world if we stop child abuse. Do you think that we should punish child abuser more harshly? Think about that for a while.

Update from Bloggin’ Frogs

Welcome friends all over the world! We’re so glad you’re visiting our blog. It’s been a while since we’ve posted but we are on the brink of posting tons of work. We are busy working on opinion pieces right now and hope to have them posted to our blog in the next week. We are writing about all sorts of “hot” topics like gun control, the importance of recycling, education for women in places like Pakistan, the affect of pollution in our oceans, more recess time, bringing back chocolate milk and dodgeball to schools, and so much more.We hope you will hop on back and read these posts.

We unfortunately haven’t had much time to keep up with the Edublogs Fall Challenge. The challenges are fabulous but we just can’t seem to fit them into our busy schedule. We still love to blog and we would still love to connect with other classes on a regular basis. Please let us know if you are interested. Orphan Train Riders

From 1850 to 1930 thousands of kids were living on the street and were made fun of and considered “street urchins”. From 1854 to 1928 Charles Loring Brace began the Children’s Aid Society. Later, he decided to help the poor children he knew were innocent. His idea was to make a train that carries children to go to west states, in only a few days notice, out of big cities like New York into the western states. They only were taken to places in America to get to new homes. The children were lined up while people gawked at them and chose the one they wanted and left carelessly if they did not want any of them. If they were not chosen they went back on the train to another state. Though some got bad homes that made them work to the bone others got good homes with food, love, shelter, and beds and warmth. The last train took off in 1992 and 200,000 new programs appeared to help the homeless from the streets and the orphan trains ended.

Beautiful San Diego

San Diego is a very interesting place. It has lot of interesting places to visit like the San Diego Zoo or Sea World. There’s Belmont Park in Mission Beach in San Diego by the beach. San Diego also has a lot of beaches because we are right by the Pacific Ocean . Two places I like to go to are Balboa Park and Legoland.

San Diego has lots of beaches like Mission Beach, Torrey Pines State Beach, Pacific Beach, Silver Strand, and La Jolla Shores beach. That’s alot of San Diego beaches. A beach is a good place to go if you like to surf and boogie board or it is a really hot day. In San Diego it usually has a warm climate so it is good to be by a beach or water.

Belmont Park owns the only wooden roller coaster in the U.S.A. It has four main rides. It is called the fun zone that includes the Giant Dipper (the roller coaster), the beach blaster, the bumper cars, and the Vertical Tarro. Belmont Park has a lot of both with lots of fun games and there are also both with great food and snacks.

Sea World is a marine mammal park. Sea World has a mall, shows, hotels, and a new water park. How cool is that! Sea World has water related animals, like otters, and ocean related animals, like whales and sharks.SeaWorld is related to Aquatica. Sea World opened in 1964 in the southern side of mission bay. In 1980 Sea World became the first zoological park with ocean animals in the world.

The San Diego Zoo has lots of animals you could look at. It has apes, monkeys, lions, bears, birds, pandas, polar bears, elephants, reptiles, amphibians, desert tortoise, cats, condors, plants, insects, and other animals. My favorite thing at the zoo is the pandas.

One of the most popular malls in San Diego is the U T C mall. It is a very large mall with many stores and stands. The stands are actually really cool because they have stands for phone cases, brochures for vacations, and many other things. U T C also has a very fancy movie theater called Ark light that plays old movies like Grease. You can even reserve your seat before the movie starts.

Balboa Park is a landscape of arts and cultures. It has a very big museum with great paintings and sculptures. Balboa Park is not just a museum it also has a kids place where there is a fake grocery store a little houses. There is even a little class for kids to learn about science. Balboa Park was built for the World’s Fair in 1915-16.

Legoland is a theme park in northern San Diego where everything is made of legos. They have rides and cool exhibits. They have a ride called Project X where you go up a big hill and then you whoosh down the other side really fast. There’s a miniature city made out of legos too.

San Diego is a fabulous place to live and there is so much to do. We are lucky to live here. What fun things do you have to do in your town?

A Curie Student’s Life

Hello! We are Curie Elementary students in San Diego, California. We are 4th graders and our teacher is Mrs McKelvey. We go to school 5 days a week–Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Our school starts at 7:45am and ends at 2:10 pm so our school goes on for 6 and a half hours, except on Wednesday because it is short day and ends at 12:15 pm.We have six grade levels in our school–from Kindergarten to 5th grade.

Some of the subjects we do in our school day is Math, Word Study, Writing, Shared Reading, Social Studies, Science (we go to the classroom next door for that with Mrs.Monastero), and Book Clubs. Book Clubs is reading in groups we have jobs that we do like Story Summarizer you summarizer the story and there is a lot more.
