The First Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in the United States of America. It is celebrated in the fourth Thursday of November every year. It is a holiday when we give thanks to what we have. I will now tell you about the first Thanksgiving.

The first Thanksgiving wasn’t on the fourth Thursday of November, it was in late October, 1621. The first Thanksgiving was a feast to declare peace between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans. The Pilgrims were a group of English settlers. They fled England because they persecuted for their religious beliefs. They sailed on a boat called the Mayflower. The Mayflower stopped at place in what is now New England, and the Pilgrims named it New Plymouth . When they first arrived at Plymouth they noticed that there were other people there. Today we call those people the indians or Native Americans.

The Indians and Pilgrims  became friends. The Indians taught the Pilgrims how to pick corn, and fish with their bare hands. They then decided to have a feast to give thanks to each other because they had learned a lot of things from each other. The feast was also meant to declare peace between the Pilgrims and the Indians.

Today we celebrate Thanksgiving to give thanks to what we have. And that is what I know of the first Thanksgiving. Check out this short video about the first Thanksgiving.

Droughts

Do you know what a drought is? If you don’t, keep reading to find out.

Silk Road #12

This is what soil looks like in an area that is suffering severe drought.

A drought is a long period of time when there is a water shortage and it has barely rained. This is bad because it can cause crop loss which is when it is so hot that crops wilt. When crops wilt we also have food shortage.

What causes drought?

  • Greenhouse gases cause drought.  How? When people use fossil fuels, it lets of greenhouse gases which stay in Earth’s atmosphere and cause heat
  • Global warming and climate change. How? Another cause of drought is global warming and climate change because as years pass it keeps getting hotter and hotter and heat causes water to evaporate
  • Us! How?  You are probably thinking, Us? How did us humans cause drought?  We humans cause drought by wasting water. Sometimes it’s when leave the sink on while we’re brushing are teeth. Sometimes it’s when you flush the toilet when it is not necessary.

But the people who caused it can also help. We can conserve(save) water. Don’t keep the sink on when you’re brushing your teeth. Be extra careful that you don’t flush the toilet by accident.

Remember to take your part and take drought down!

The surface of Mercury that is facing the sun has a extreme temperature of 472 Celsius but the is not facing the sun is -173 Celsius, but Mercury is not the hottest planet Venus is. Mercury has different seasons unlike some of the other planets such as Earth. Mercury has appearance to look like the moon and has the most craters ever. Mercury has a equator of 4,879 kilometers. Only two spacecraft carriers have visited Mercury on in 1974 to 1975 and the other one in 2004. In conclusion Mercury is a very interesting planet. Harlequin Bugs

Harlequin bug

Nymph harlequin bug

When we went to Rose Canyon our nice tour guides showed us the Harlequin bug. These bugs are very fascinating and smart at the same time. The Harlequin bug is part of the Pentatomidae species but the scientific name for the Harlequin bug is Mugantia Pentatomidae. They are very annoying around veggies such as radishes ,broccoli , and an oriental flower called the Cleome. The harlequin bug is actually a beetle because every beetle a a line down their back that kinda makes the shape of a triangle. A Harlequin bug’s way of defense is falling down. That way predators won’t get to touch it, grab it ,or eat it. Baby Harlequin  bugs can be as small as two centimeters but the biggest  Harlequin bug that we saw was about half an inch. Some people in our class went there last year and they saw 2 harlequins bugs mating together to produce offspring. I really saw that the development of the Harlequin bugs have increased with more nymphs and adults since last year. Harlequin bugs are NOT poisoness  the are NOT harmful either so if you see one don’t worry. Harlequin bugs are fascinating bugs to learn about and to observe in real life .

Veterans Day Around the World

On Tuesday, November 11th we will have a day off school to honor our veterans. This holiday is a special day to honor all the brave men and women who served in the armed forces, like the army, navy, marines corps, air force, and coast guard. These people risked their lives to make sure the rest of us can enjoy the freedom we often take for granted.

Here’s a short video about how Veterans’ Day was started.

This holiday is recognized throughout the world. We were wondering how you honor the veterans in your country? What are some things you could do to show your appreciation or gratitude to veterans?

Ava’s Avatar

avatarI’m Ava and this is my avatar. I made my avatar at http://doppleme.com. My avatar has blue eyes like me. She has blond hair, jeans, and a t-shirt because that’s what I usually wear. I chose that shirt because I have always wanted to go to New York City. My favorite season is fall so I put a pumkin by my avatars leg. You can make your avatar at http://doppleme.com. Good luck.

Cute Cats

MelDo you love cats? Well, I love cats and that’s what this post is about. Cats have better hearing than people and dogs. They can hear a tiny mouse in the walls that you don’t even notice. Cats lick their selves to get clean. Cats only like to get wet if they decide too. Other wise they hate it. Also don’t make them too mad or they’ll scratch you with their claws. Their claws are in their paws. Lastly what I have to say is CATS ARE CUTE!

Save trees!

Trees are important to our planet.

Did you ever notice we use a lot of things from trees? Well, we do. We use wood to make pencils and houses. But those lumberjacks are forgetting why trees are important. For one thing animals like birds live in trees and you cut down their homes, lumberjacks! Secondly, if we cut down trees more carbon dioxide goes in the air. This can cause droughts{which is a long period with no rain you’ll see so in another post}. Trees help us breathe. They take carbon dioxide though their leaves then give out oxygen. Trees are important so let’s save them!

Hawaii is made up of undersea volcanos. They erupted thousands of years ago. Then people traveled there on boat and built homes there. Hawaii is a very nice place to live and to visit. With its sandy beaches and warm weather, Hawaii is like paradise.
