Red Ribbon Week

Our school is doing Red Ribbon Week during October 22-26. We had an assembly on Friday to kick off the week. It was about saying no to drugs. Police officers came and talked to us about drug safety and told us about how we can help by not buying drugs or using drugs. They brought in a helicopter and an army truck. At lunch we got to go in the vehicles, look at the inside, and get autographs signed. I got my paper signed by someone named Carl. I thought he and his dog were awesome. His dog found a guy with drugs on him super fast during a demonstration. Red Ribbon Week is really fun.

Shadow Tracking

Hello. We would like to tell you something about what we did in science this week for our Edublogs challenge. We’re also hoping you can answer a few questions for us.  This week we learned that the Sun always rises in the east and sets in the west no matter where you are on Earth. Is that really true? Does the Sun rise in the east and set in the west where you live?

Also, we tracked our shadows throughout the day. We went outside on a sunny day. We traced around our shadows with chalk on the blacktop (playground) in the early morning around 8:30 a.m., then again at 11:45 a.m, and finally at 2:05 p.m. We wanted to find out if our shadows moved and changed size and shape. We discovered that they did. In the morning our shadows were tall and skinny, and the later morning and middle of the day they were short and fat. We were wondering if you’d get the same results too if you did this experiment where you live? It is fall (or autumn) here. Does the season affect the size and shape of shadows too?

We look forward to hearing from you.

Journey Back in Time

Earlier this year we created first person narratives in which we pretended to be passengers on the Mayflower. In 1620, 102 brave souls traveled from Plymouth, England to a strange new land called America. Among them were the Pilgrims who were traveling to America for religious freedom.

How brave are you? Would you take such a risk and travel to the strange new land? Check out VoiceThread first and decide.

Is Common Sense a Good Thing?

We read a folktale called Common Sense: An Anansi Tale. Afterwards we thought about our own common sense and created a VoiceThread. We rated ourselves on a scale of 1 to 10…1 being poor/terrible common sense and 10 being fantastic/lots of common sense.

How do you rate your common sense?

Geometry in Our World

This month we wrapped up a unit on geometry. Students wandered around campus and took photos of real world examples of geometric shapes, lines, and forms. We started a new VoiceThread called “Geometry in Our World” and students are commenting on what geometric shapes, forms, and lines they see in each picture.

Here’s some of the pictures students took. What can you see?
