History of Paris

Eiffel tower

The sites and scenery of Paris are amazing.  Paris is known for its historical landmarks, fashion, art and romanticism.  the nickname for Paris is the City of Lights because Paris was one of the first cities to have electricity in the 1870s.  if you were French, instead of “the city of lights” you could have said “la ville lumiere.’

One of the many historical landmarks is the Eiffel Tower.  Paris, France got the Eiffel Tower on March 31, 1889. the person who designed the Eiffel Tower was Gustav Eiffel.   once the wrought Iron lattice tower was built, it attracted tourists. There were so many tourists that London, England built its own tower, called the Tower of London.

The second historical site is called the Notre Dame Cathederal.  the Notre Dame Cathederal is a Catholic Church. Its construction started in 1163 and was completed in 1345. It is visited by 30,000 people a day of all religions because of the beautiful architecture and art inside.  Unfortunately it sadly caught on fire on April 15, 2019 but luckily, most of the Cathederal still remains.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, French fashion was a hit.  Vogue was founded in 1892. Vogue is a very popular fashion magazine. some of the most famous Paresian designers are Coco Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Jean-Paul Gaultier.  Paris is still known as the fashion capital of the world.

Paris is full of history and culture.  The Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathederal and the fashion history are a short sample of some of the interesting attractions Paris has to offer.  People continue to travel to Paris to see these and other historical landmarks, and the world is inspired by the artists and architects who call Paris home.

Let’s make trash extinct!

Coastal Zone Management Act 40th Anniversary - NOAA

Calling all the people! Calling all the people! Trash is bad! Boats, jet skis, and ships are putting bad oils in our waters. Metal cans may take about 50 years to biodegrade, biodegrade means break down or disintegrated, so remember that soda can you left on the beach a few days ago… yup it’s still there! And did you know plastic bags take up to 450 years to biodegrade in the ocean! That’s a long time! Thousands of helpless sea creatures are dying because of this mess, and you can help them!

Mark your calendars! The Annual California Clean the Beach Day is coming up and its on Saturday, September 21! So… get up and clean! Everybody can help! The annual California Clean the beach day is runned by the california government and is trying their best to make trash extinct on their shores. The annual California clean the beach Day is also yearly event that happens every year and its coming up! Even though you don’t live in california you can still help! Just go to your local beach and clean up!

This pollution in the water isn’t helping the water. Giant oil spills happen all the time, oil goes in the water and stays there, for a long, long time, until something eats it…

Places like Pearl Harbor, Hawaii have lots of shipwrecks, some worse than others. Pearl Harbor is a lagoon harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. Much of the harbor and surrounding lands is a United States Army deep-water naval base. It is also the headquarters of the United Pacific Fleet. The attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Jan on Sunday, December 7, 1941 brought the United States into World War II . The great navy ship that has been blown up by Japan in Pearl Harbor is still leaking tons and tons of oil everyday! And can you believe that Navy Ship has been leaking for over about a hundred years! And you can even see the ship in person!

Clean up the ocean! Its not just the beach, its the water! Do you surf, swim, or even boggie board? When you swallow enough of the stuff in the water it can make you sick and even maybe shorten your lifespan! The gas from boats, don’t help. Have you heard of the giant floating island in the middle of the pacific ocean? Thats not the only one theres about 15 of them! So.. get up and help! Lets make trash extinct!

U.S. Government Shuts Down!

Have you been watching the news for the past few weeks? Well if you have you may of heard of the possibility of the Government ‘’shutting down.’’  Well it happened, and it’s affecting kids too.  On October 1st at 12:01 a.m., the government shut down. It’s day twelve of the government shutdown and it looks like it’s still going on. Politicians are fighting over a new government national health plan nicknamed Obama Care. Some politicians think it’s going to cost too much money and the government can’t afford it.

I think this is very idiotic that the government has shut down. When I first heard of the government shut down, I thought it was only important for the parents or grown ups to know about.

The government is closing schools, museums, and the very popular Miramar Air Show (in San Diego, California, USA). Can you believe that! The Miramar Air show is a very popular airshow. About 100,000 to 150,000 people attend the show each year. People from all around the United States come just to see this amazing show. And they are closing it because of the government shutdown.

Well, this shutdown isn’t just affecting parents this is effecting kids too. Day cares such as Head Start which is used by many single moms are closing, preschools, some elementary schools, and some middle schools are closing.

Some people are losing their jobs to take care of their children and others are being fired because they can’t come to work.  Food stamps from the government are not coming and children and parents are waiting and getting hungry.

The two parties are still fighting and the shutdown is still going on. How do you think this is going to end? Do you think the government of the United States of America is ever going to turn back on? What do you think is going to happen to America, put your answer in a comment below.

Native Plants

The White Sage plant is native and grows in Rose Canyon.

What are some Native Plants in Rose Canyon, you ask? Well Rose Canyon has lots of different native plants that are native to the county of San Diego, California. Rose Canyon has lots of native plants like White Sage, Black Sage, and Poison Oak.

There are lots of sages like White Sage and Black Sage. White Sage, Salvia Apiana, bee sage, or sacred sage in English is a very strong scented plant, that is native to the southern coastal side of California and the eastern coastal side of California, mostly found in the coastal sage scrub habitat of Southern California and Baja California.

White sage has a white appearance in the light and in the dark. White sage can also be called Salvia Apiana, another name for white sage is Bee sage. This plant is native because,  the Native people used this sage at the bottom of their bowl to keep the bugs away, and keep their precious acorns good, with the plants strong scent.White Sage blooms lots of flowers in the fall, There flowers are a white daisy-ish like flower.

Another native Sagebrush is called Black Sage, is also called Salvia Mellifera. Salvia Mellifera is a small plant that has a very strong scent. Black Sage is native to California. It is most common in the coastal side of Southern California and northern Baja California.

Black sage has a dark appearance, especially during a drought. Black Sage just like white stage, this plant is native because, the Native people used this sage at the bottom of their bowl to keep the bugs away, and keep their precious acorns fresh, with the plants strong scent. Also just like White Sage,Black Sage blooms lots of pretty flowers but these flowers are different, these flowers color is not a black flower, it is actually a dark purple-is color flower.

Did you know that poison oak is a native plant? Well, it is. This three leafed plant, toxicodendron  diversilobum also called Poison oak can be poisonous but a great medicine. The Native people from long ago would scrap of the poisonous oils and mush up the plant up and use it for medicine but, safety is first and NEVER touch poison oak, it can cause a major rash.

There are lots of native plants in rose canyon like, White and black sage, and poison oak. Some can be dangerous and some can attract lots of buzzing bees. So…..always  remember always safety first!

San Diego Museum of Art

On Thursday, April 11,  Mrs. McKelvey’s class went on a field trip to the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa park. We saw a lot of beautiful paintings and sculptures. They inspired us when we made our own art. We got to make our own “rip” art in the museum. We ripped small pieces of paper to make landscape collages.

One of the paintings was called the “Young Shepherdess.”The Young Shepherdess” was the most liked painting by the tour guide and the museum visitors. Another painting was called, “The Hands of Dr. Moore.” The “Hands of Dr. Moore” is a very disturbing picture. Our class did not like it that much.

The museum was very interesting and fun. We saw lots of different paintings, pictures, and sculptures. We hope we will get to go again.

Smoking is harmful

I think smoking should be illegal because smoking can be very harmful to you and your body too. It can also be harmful to other people who are around you when you are smoking.Around 5 million people die from smoking each year, and around 3,000 people die from second hand smoking each year.

Lots of people really hate smoking. About 5 million people die each year from smoking. Smoking is very bad for the user and also others too. I think smoking should be illegal and I don’t even know why it isn’t yet.

Smoking is not only bad for the user but for others too. If you are smoking next to another person, it creates second hand smoking. About 3,000 people die from second hand smoke. Second hand smoke is just like the other person is smoking. They can have the very harmful things happen to them too.

Smoking is mostly bad for the user. It can be fatal and shut down the brain. Did you know about 430,000 people die from smoking tobacco each year? There are about 7,000 bad chemicals in a cigarette, and at least 70 of the chemicals cause cancer.

A cigarette is just a stick filled with thousands of chemicals that causes lots of bad things to you, your body, and others too. What do you think, should we have a “smoking only place” for those who want it? Should smoking be illegal?
